Police were on high alert at the Dannhauser Magistrates Court on Monday, fearing a possible confrontation between the families of murdered nurse, Sr Fiona Baaitjies and murder accused, Wentzel 'Oubaas' Witbooi.
Fiona was shot dead on the N11 on January 5. Her sister, Tessa, was also shot and wounded but managed to drive away with her two children.
Mr Witbooi’s first appearance in court was postponed pending a preliminary report from the psychiatrist at Madadeni Hospital.
The report recommended that Mr Witbooi be sent away to Fort Napier for further psychiatric evaluation.
The case was then postponed to February 8 for Mr Witbooi's bail hearing.
He will remain in custody at the Dundee prison cells. The brief appearance left no time for contact between the two families who maintained their distance.
Before the proceedings got underway, friends and family of Tessa and Fiona held a peaceful protest outside the court.
With candles and posters bearing the words 'You shall not murder. Exodus 20: 13' and 'Stop woman abuse,' the group called for justice to be served.
Honouring the memory of their fallen sister they cried out for bail to be denied, increasing their protests when Mr Witbooi's lawyer, Alan Kelly, entered the premises.
